Help us to provide more affordable housing to those in need.

In 1978, when caring for her ailing grandfather, 28 year old Janet Witkin was struck with the inadequacy of his options - to stay at home with little support or institutionalization and loss of independence in a nursing home. She was inspired to create the first cooperative housing program for seniors and Affordable Living for the Aging was born.

In Los Angeles, over one-third of the city's 1.2MM older adults are facing housing instability and that number is expected to double in the next 10 years.

Today, ALA has expanded our mission to serve as a comprehensive resource for homeless and low-income seniors as well as those suffering from physical handicaps and mental illnesses. From our pilot home-sharing program, we've grown to include affordable housing, in-home care, supportive services/social services, roommate matching services, and property management for elders. To date, we've served over 30,000 seniors in need.

In the spirit of our late founder, Janet Witkin, ALA is committed to evolving our mission to serve as a comprehensive resource for seniors and improve their health outcomes for this overlooked population. We believe we all should be able to age with dignity, especially our elders.
